Bee’ah Hails Success For Recycling Initiative Launched In Ramadan

MyBee’ah, a community engagement initiative by Bee’ah – the Middle East’s leading and award-winning integrated environmental and waste management company – launched a Ramadan recycling initiative on August 1st, 2011 resulting in improved waste audits.

Results show that waste collection in Ramadan this year increased by 10% compared to the waste audit for Ramadan last year. An average of 8,140 tonnes per week was collected and transported to Bee’ah’s Waste Management Complex at Al Saj’ah for processing into recyclable paper, cardboard, plastics and aluminium while organic waste was sent for composting.

"We are extremely pleased with how the initiative has been received by residents and the results show how popular our campaign was. The new initiative educates residents on the importance of the environmental principle of the three Rs – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and has helped to considerably reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill," commented Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, Chief Executive Officer of Bee’ah, “which underlines that our residents really are committed to recycling, and we will be working hard to keep providing them with solutions to save their environment."

An increase of 17.41% of household waste is generated during Ramadan of which 24% is made up of plastic bottles and organic waste. Sharjah residents have expressed their need for informative guidelines from Bee’ah on how and where they can take their recyclable waste, as well as other interesting facts and tips on how they can help lead an example as environmental advocates within their community.

Bee’ah launched the awareness-raising campaign at the beginning of Ramadan to educate the public and encourage them to adopt environmentally sustainable lifestyles. The campaign’s purpose was to inform residents to reduce the amount of waste and recycled items which otherwise end up in landfills across the UAE. The project has been launched in 3 of Sharjah’s prominent and highest footfall locations, namely: Al Qasba, Sahara Centre and Mega Mall. Informational kiosks featuring special Ramadan calendars, highlight useful facts and tips on how people can reduce their consumption of food, water and energy, as well as the importance of recycling. The aim is to promote environmental advocacy and urge the public to share this message with their family, friends and neighbours. After all, Ramadan is about caring for others and this is the best time to care for the planet.

The uniquely created Ramadan calendar contains simple guidelines on how individuals can reduce their waste by choosing items with less packaging and turning off the TV when not in use; re-use paper bags or give an item to someone who needs it instead of throwing them away; as well as easy ways to bring in recyclables such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and aluminium cans to the Bee’ah Recycling Depot at Al Qasba.

Bee’ah, was recently awarded “Best Waste Management Company of the Year in the Middle East” by the Facilities Management Award for adopting international best practices, with various significant accomplishments to enhance the Emirate’s environment and achievements in added-value commercial ventures, while upholding its commitments to Sharjah’s community.

Sharjah inaugurates the biggest Paintball Park in the Middle East at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club

Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, inaugurated Yesterday the biggest Paintball Park in the Middle East at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, the premier one-stop venue for a vast range of recreational facilities, both indoor and outdoor.

The Paintball Park includes a new building that is comprised of two floors. The ground floor has a military hangar theme with a main reception and registration desk, a caf by Grab’N’Go, a pro shop selling all paintball accessories, male and female changing rooms, showers, lockers and briefing rooms.

The Park’s two new fields are a new concept in the UAE - one field is a replica of the city of London, where a London taxi and a Rolls Royce create a typical London atmosphere, along with a replica of Hyde Park, and other famous London landmarks such as Harrods, The Ritz and several others. To complete the London "experience", there are authentic London street signs, red telephone booths, lamp posts, and postboxes all imported from the UK. The entrance of the field is a replica of the London Underground tube with Knightsbridge station as the destination.

The field has a built-in sound system, ultra violet lights for exciting "glow in the dark" games at night. Everything will be monitored by CCTV to be watched LIVE by people outside the field.

The second field is designed as a bank and will be used for a new concept which is a first in the UAE known as CQC - Close Quarter Combat. The field is furnished as the actual interior of a bank with desks, an ATM machine and a vault room and will also be monitored by CCTV.

The Sharjah Paintball Park also includes three outdoor fields that are unique in the United Arab Emirates with airplanes, jeeps, bunkers and high towers.

Commenting on the occasion, Sheikh Abdullah said: "Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club is proud to include the biggest Paintball Park in the Middle East within its premises. We are pleased to announce these amazing new features brought in from around the globe, which will benefit everyone, making every visit a fun experience for families, from the UAE and around the region."

Nomination process for FNC elections starts Sunday

Dubai: Candidates wishing to contest the Federal National Council (FNC) elections in September can register starting Sunday at various voting centres across the country.

Half of the total 40 members of the FNC will be elected in the country's second elections slated for September 24. The other seats will be filled by government-nominated members.

Candidates can submit their nomination papers at the specified centres across the country from Sunday until Wednesday from 9am until 3pm.

The National Election Commission (NEC) will announce the preliminary list of candidates on Saturday, while the final list of candidates will be announced on August 28 and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is September 21.

Potential candidates must personally submit their nomination papers to the committee in their respective emirates along with the necessary documents.

Every individual from among the 129,000 voters who have been chosen by the government is eligible to file nomination papers abiding by the set rules.

Meanwhile, in a bid to directly communicate with people regarding the FNC elections, the minister of FNC affairs has joined the micro-blogging social media website, Twitter.

Dr. Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Federal National Council (FNC) Affairs, who is also the chairman of the NEC, joined Twitter under the handle @AnwarGargash.

With this, Dr. Gargash became the first UAE federal minister to officially join Twitter for communicating with UAE nationals and others interested in the UAE's FNC elections.

Dr. Gargash, who personally manages the account, said Twitter was an ideal platform for directly communicating with people from all walks of society interested in the FNC elections, especially the youth who constitute 35 per cent of the total voters in the Electoral College.

At a meeting with members of the NEC and the press last week, Dr. Gargash had said the biggest challenge facing the FNC elections was voter turnout.

"It should be understood that we are engaging in a new experience. According to our observations the biggest challenge we face is getting a high percentage of voters," he had said.

He also said the ministry was running an awareness campaign to maximise female voter turnout.

Follow the elections

The National Election Commission offers direct communication channels with citizens interested in following the news on the Federal National Council elections through www.uaenec.ae, the NEC's call centre at 60056661, or by fax at 024041155. The Twitter handle name for Dr. Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affiars is: @AnwarGargash

Gulf News reader captures picture of driver with sunshade blocking his view

By Jennifer Catoto, Gulf News reader Published: 00:00 August 15, 2011Gulf News

Dangerous practices
Gulf News reader Jennifer Catoto took this picture in order to point out the dangerous practices by some drivers on the roads of Dubai. Catoto said: ‘I understand that it is very hot and people want to protect themselves from the sun in every way. But by putting the sunshade on the rear windshield, the driver was blocking his visibility and his car was carelessly swerving right and left as he wanted to see the cars behind him.’ He was not only risking his own life but the life of others around him, she said. Catoto added: ‘How many lives do we need to sacrifice before people learn to be defensive and not offensive drivers?’

Thousands to put best foot forward for charity drive

Dubai: More than 4,000 people have registered for the Dubai Municipality ‘Yalla Walk' initiative to date.

The welcome packs include a pedometer, T-shirt and instructions. Every registered walker is required to update the distance walked, which would be converted into a charity fund from Dubai Municipality and the Al Maktoum Charity Foundation.

The ‘Every Step is a Reward,' the initiative was a success upon its launch at the beginning of Ramadan, with more than 600 people registering on the first day across all five designated parks. The initiative is being sponsored by Reebok and supported by the Al Maktoum Foundation and Al Fattan Properties, and is being held across the public parks of Dubai.

It aims to educate the public about healthy habits during Ramadan, raise charity funds and encourage people to walk on tracks across Dubai.

Zena Habi, a Reebok fitness expert, said she couldn't emphasise enough the benefits of exercise and the need to take care of your body.

Brisk walk

"I advise everyone to go for a 30 minute brisk walk after iftar. It will increase body metabolism and help digestion, eventually keeping one away from serious medical complications such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, etc." she said.

Zena will be on hand at the Reebok tent to provide health and fitness advice to walkers at Safa Park every Monday and Zabeel Park on Wednesday evenings between 8pm and 9pm.

The Yalla Walk initiative was established to promote walking, as an easy and economic way to stay fit and healthy that people can easily apply into their day-to-day life.

There are 33 safe and accessible walking tracks in urban and rural areas available for use.

"The campaign aims to help the needy people and promote walking as well as to support charity under the slogan ‘Each step is a Reward', and the doors are open for institutions and individuals to help raise the charity fund by supporting the Municipality in this initiative," Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of the Municipality, said.

Participants can raise the funds allocated by Municipality and its partners by merely walking. The more walkers on the tracks, the more funds are raised for the charity. Distances will be recorded on individual pedometers, supplied to participants on registration.

A fundraising meter installed at each park will record the distance collectively walked and will serve to help the public keep track of the funds they have raised. They can also update their distances through SMS or online.

The science of fasting

Dubai: With no food or water being consumed by the body for an average of 14 hours during the Ramadan fast, it is important to take precautions against dehydration and ulcers, a medical professional warns.

"When we fast, our body undergoes an intense detoxification," says Dr Chandy George, an ayurvedic doctor at Balance Wellness Club. "Fats metabolise faster, muscle tissue starts breaking down, the cells get dehydrated, activity slows down, toxins are released…" To counteract these effects and make the most of the detoxification, it is crucial to understand what goes on in our bodies while we fast.

A fasting person tends to sweat and urinate more, says Dr George. "This is the first sign that the body is detoxifying itself." However, losing liquids so rapidly may pose a threat to the body, if not handled adequately, he warns, stressing the importance of consuming 3.5 to 4 litres of water per adult, per day, in the hours from iftar to suhour.

Importance of Suhour

Suhour should always be the lightest meal, he advises. A glass of milk, juice and four to five dates is all the body needs, he says. "Although food such as corn and oatmeal are permissible, the body does not require them to sustain itself through the fast. Overeating at suhour means the person begins the fast feeling sluggish: the result of the body's digestive system working overtime to digest a midnight meal."

Dr George warns of the dangers of skipping suhour. "Assuming a person goes to bed at 10pm, skips suhour and then ends his fast near 7pm, he starves and dehydrates his body for 21 hours at a stretch. The human body is not equipped to fast for 21 hours. It is dangerous and subjecting the body to this behaviour may lead to various complications, including stomach ulcers," he says.

While ending the fast at iftar, the doctor recommends a light meal consisting of water, dates and non-citric fruits. Allowing the stomach an hour to digest the food, the person should then eat the main course of dinner.

Fasting and your body

At 4.30am, when people wake up for their suhour meal, the brain and body don't comprehend what's going on. "The body's biological clock still believes it's night. When people eat suhour at this hour, the body and brain are confused. Nonetheless, the digestion process begins," says Dr George.

"During that process, the person may feel lethargic. To avoid that lazy feeling, suhour should be the lightest meal of the day. If one was to consume heavy, oily or non-veg food at this hour, the person is likely to begin feeling exhausted, since the body uses it's energy to digest the meal."

Between 9am and 11am, the body starts losing energy, says Dr George.

By noon, the body starts experiencing the first bouts of exhaustion. The brain starts sending signs of lack of energy to the rest of the body. For fear of starvation, the body slows down.

"Our bodies are built to survive," says Dr George. "An hour after the first messages of starvation are being sent out, the body begins to regain energy by burning stored fat. Post 3pm, the change in our bodies is dramatic.

"Between 3pm and 5pm the body realises it's dehydrating. Sweat and heat make the water loss more obvious. As every cell and tissue in the body requires water to function, the body slows down its activities, because the brain believes there is no water left. It's a self-defence mechanism," says Dr George.

"Subsequently, brain activity slows down. When the body lacks food, it takes energy out of its reserve fats. However, when the body lacks water, it has no reserve to draw from, and therefore begins to protect itself by functioning at a slower speed. "All the reflexes, reactions and involuntary actions within the body decelerate. The body sends out signals to all organs to hold back. As a result, the person suddenly feels tired and moody." The doctor recommends that those involved in physical labour should not work beyond this point. Dehydration might lead to headaches, nausea, exhaustion and lack of focus and concentration.

Come 5pm, however, and the body goes through a miraculous transformation. The end is near, the goal is in sight and the brain understands that food and water are soon on the way. It instructs the body to put out a final burst of energy to sustain the person through the next couple of hours, confident in the knowledge that replenishment is coming in.

Trio deny impersonating policemen

Dubai: Three men have denied posing as policemen, kidnapping a Pakistani worker and stealing Dh700 and his mobile phone before leaving him in Sharjah and fleeing.

Prosecutors accused the defendants, a 37-year-old Emirati and two Pakistanis aged 33 and 24, of forcibly kidnapping the worker, M.A., in Dubai and driving him to a sandy area in Sharjah where they left him after stealing his money and mobile phone.

The three defendants pleaded not guilty and denied the accusations when they defended themselves in the Dubai Court of First Instance Sunday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said 33-year-old B.A. and 24-year-old I.A. beat up M.A. and posed as policemen. Then they forced him into 37-year-old H.M.'s car. The trio was charged with kidnapping M.A. and assaulting him inside the car before stealing his belongings, then throwing him out of the vehicle and fleeing.

Sting operation

The worker testified that the incident happened while he was sitting in a parking lot in Hor Al Anz.

"It was 9pm when B.A. and I.A. walked up to me and claimed to be policemen… when I asked them for their police ID, they asked me to shut up. Then one of them asked me to present my personal identification papers.

"Suddenly they grabbed me by my arms and forced me into the Emirati man's car. They told me that they would take me to the police station and call my sponsor to come. They refused to explain anything to me when I asked them why they wanted to take me to the police station.

"They drove to the highway which leads to the Maleeha area… then they stopped at a sandy spot. They assaulted me, stole my belongings, then they threw my wallet out of the car and left. Initially I did not resist because I believed that they were policemen…" M.A. claimed during prosecution questioning.

An Emirati lieutenant testified that police first arrested H.M., who was identified from his car plate number. The Emirati defendant cooperated with the police to arrest B.A. and I.A. in a sting operation.

The court will assign a lawyer to defend the suspects when it reconvenes on September 20.

Russian Orthodox church to open in Sharjah Saturday

Sharjah: The first St Philip the Apostle Orthodox Church in the UAE will open its doors to the public in Sharjah Saturday.

The 1,800 square-metre complex is not only a church, but a cultural hub.

Construction work on the project began in September 2007 after His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, allotted the land to the Russian Orthodox community.

Talks on the project first began in May 2005 with the visit of the first official delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, lead by the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad.

Yuri Sidorenko, a Russia businessman and chairman of the EDAPS Consortium, who is the warden of the new complex, said the building was constructed for the 200,000 Orthodox church members living in the country — mostly in Sharjah.

Sidorenko took financial responsibility for the building of the church.

He said: "A business that solely [makes] profit is hardly a success", pointing out that a devout businessman will never find happiness until his business becomes a tool that spreads spiritual values and that improves people's lives.

"An entrepreneur is a person who generates the power of life through projects. Motivation is founded either in the desire to develop and enhance life and the community around you, or in the wish to make as much money as possible and satisfy vanity." he said.

The widespread perception is that money and spirituality are incompatible, and Sidorenko believes the purpose of life is to reach a connection with God.

"The opinion that money spoils a person is a lie. It only spoils those who think that way and does not spoil those who don't.

"People who are actively involved in making money, and especially those who have reached the top of entrepreneurial success, undergo a challenging test," Sidorenko said.

He added: "While quoting Jean-Jacques Rousseau, "Money that you have is a tool of freedom; money that you pursue is a tool of slavery."

Ambulance unit makes wheelchair a life-saver

Dubai: The Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services has pressed into service a new equipment that makes the evacuation of wheelchair-bound patients from high-rise buildings considerably easier. The light-weight evacuation chair fits into narrow lifts and can be handled by one person.

Gulf News was given a preview of the chair which serves as a skid to easily slide down stairs if there are no lifts to carry patients.

"In case of a fire, a wheelchair-bound person had to be put on a stretcher and carried downstairs," said a representative of the ambulance unit. He said many hotels and shopping malls have added the evacuation chair as part of their emergency equipment.

Obese

"This is ideal for the disabled and the obese," said an executive of the corporation. The light-weight chair which has two wheels can support up to 180kg. "In case of obstacles on the way, the chair can be turned into a stretcher instantly and two people can carry the patient," said the executive. In such a situation, there are two retractable handles which can be pulled out and the chair is easily carried, he said.

The executive said that, besides paramedics, all ambulance service staff are being trained to operate the evacuation chair.

The number to call for emergency ambulance service is 999 and there are 56 stations across Dubai from where ambulance units are dispatched. Last year Dubai Ambulance had unveiled the longest ambulance bus in the world.

A little piece of Moscow in Sharjah

Sharjah: Next to the Mar Thoma church in Al Yamook, the five blue domes of the Saint Philip the Apostle Russian Orthodox Church Complex rise tall, reminiscent of a little piece of Moscow in a sandy Sharjah site.

The first Russian Orthodox Church in the Arabian Peninsula held its first service and opening ceremony Saturday.

It is the biggest Russian Orthodox Church Complex outside the former Soviet Union that also includes a cultural centre, and was named after Saint Philip, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ.

With the first stone laid in 2007, the church was financed by Ukrainian businessman Yuri Sidorenko, 50, chairman of the advisory board of the EDAPS consortium which produces identification documents and information systems such as electronic passports. He is also the adviser for International and Corporative Development of the Specialised Enterprise Holography.

Wall of icons

The church has a capacity of 900. Inside, one of the walls is adorned with images of religious icons hanging in ornate golden frames. Called the Wall of Icons, it separates the church from the altar.

The wall is made of Indian teak wood, carved and plated with gold leaf in the UAE. Each of the icons was painted in Moscow and brought to Sharjah.

Above, a painted fresco adorns the high domed ceiling with four smaller frescoes of Jesus Christ's apostles representing Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

"One cannot over estimate the importance this church has for the 200,000 Russians in the UAE. It is the first Russian Orthodox Church in this part of the world and people have been wanting to have it for a long time," said Sidorenko, who was given the highest award for the Russian Orthodox Church, the order of Glory and Honour First Degree by the Holy Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

"It was not hard getting it built thanks to the support of Sharjah leadership, who expressed a sincere desire for a cultural monument to be located here," he added. "We are grateful to the UAE government."

Father Alexander Zarkeshev, 46, said he was overjoyed this day had come.

Saint Philip the Apostle Russian Orthodox Church Complex will start regular services in September. The building will be open to people of all faiths.

Unique idea: Now, shop for free

Dubai: Imagine going shopping, browsing through the aisles of a supermarket, picking up anything that appeals to you, and then walking away without paying a single dirham.

When Sample Central, a new concept store by Australian entrepreneur Anthony James, opens its doors to Dubai at Festival City in November, the dream of shopping for free will become a reality for many.

"It's tryvertising [try before you buy], in the best sense possible," says James. "Consumers get the opportunity to take something and try it out before making the decision to buy."

In exchange for their purchases, consumers pay with their opinion. Each buyer is required to fill out a survey of the product they have taken home, in exchange for being given the item.

A retail store destination like no other, Sample Central is a members-only store, with an annual membership of Dh100. Members have access to their own online portal page on the store's website, www.samplecentral.ae, to manage their shopping experiences. While membership will only open closer to the launch date of the store, pre-registration is now available on the website.

Since each member is allowed to pick up five items per visit, per day, to the store, time and access is restricted. "A member needs to pre-book to shop there. Each shopping experience is limited to an hour of in-store time, at the end of which the shopper checks out, heads home to test their free products and submits a review.

"Human nature dictates that everyone loves something for free," says James. "As a result, there are no prices associated with our products. People will "buy" products based entirely on what is relevant to them and what appeals to them instead of buying based on affordability."

The concept of try before you buy also has huge financial benefits for the brand, explains James. "Take, for example, a bottle of shampoo. Most people already know which shampoo works best for them. It's a brand they've been using for a long time. However, given the chance to get another brand for free, and having tried it out, they may just prefer it over their existing brand. Our surveys show that 80 per cent of the time, consumers are ready to pay extra for a new brand that they have sampled, over their existing product."

When the store launches in November, expect to sample from around 150 different brands, on a fortnightly rotation, so that no product remains in the store for over two weeks at a time. Products and items available will include most things that one could find in a supermarket. All FMCG items from foodstuff to cosmetics, cleaning products, accessories and electronics will be available, from the low-budget brands all the way up to the designer tags.

As James says, it's the country's first free store. Who can refuse such an irresistible offer?

100 dirhams is the annual membership fee

15-year-old Norwegian girl: Please don’t uproot me

Dubai: A 15-year-old Norwegian girl in Dubai caught in a row between her divorced parents has launched a campaign on social media to avoid being uprooted from the UAE.

Maria Gharifard, whose passport expires on August 31, is fighting hard to avoid leaving Dubai for Oslo against her will because of a complaint filed by her mother who is in Norway.

Her first video appeal on YouTube was posted on August 2, followed by another on August 4. Speaking in a calm, composed voice with her American English accent, Maria said: "I am not targeting my mother directly. I just want my story to be heard. The Norwegian embassy has already told me that I have the right to a five-year passport. However, my mother has complained to the Norwegian authorities. And as long as there is a complaint, I cannot renew my passport. This will take a long time and my passport would be expired by then," she said in response to online queries from supporters.

Happy in Dubai

Maria comes from a mixed background and has led a happy life in Dubai. Her father, who is of Muslim heritage, is a Norwegian citizen.

"As a proud Norwegian citizen, Maria has grown to love and understand both backgrounds, and feels right at home in Dubai, the land of expatriates," her appeal states.

In 2007, her mother moved back to Norway after separating from her father. They divorced two years later, leaving Maria in her father's custody in Dubai, which is what Maria wanted as per her online statements.

In addition to YouTube, Maria has started a Facebook campaign and also an online petition through www.change.org. On the "Support Maria" Facebook page, the student of Raffles International School-Dubai said her online petition is her last-ditch effort to avoid losing her right to travel.

Asked what her mother thinks about her problem, Maria said: "You can ask my mother's opinion about it. But regardless of her opinion on the issue, the passport will still expire at the end of the month and I should have the right to get it renewed."

Maria said she hopes her web appeal will gather enough signatures which she plans to present to Norwegian authorities for them to change their mind.

Tom Elvesæther, First Secretary at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Abu Dhabi, said they are not in a position to comment on ongoing cases. "In general … all Norwegians under the age of 18, as a main rule, need approval from both parents before a new travel document can be issued by any Norwegian passport-issuing authority. Citizenship does not depend on a valid travel document."
