Fire disrupts shows on 41 TV channels

Dubai: A fire that broke out at the broadcast centres of the Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) at Dubai Media City on Sunday caused disruptions in transmission on 41 of its channels.

The network ran an alert notice on its website stating that an "incident" at the broadcast centre in Dubai resulted in a small fire that resulted in a power failure that led to disruption of some television services.

Out of OSN's 81 television channels, only 44 are functioning as usual, including free-to-air and paid channels. Alison Wilcox, the spokesperson for OSN, said a contingency plan was put in place where the 41 channels that have been affected have been broadcasting unscheduled material.

So far it is not known how long it will take for the issue to be resolved. Wilcox did not comment on questions regarding possible compensation for affected subscribers.

A senior police official at Dubai Civil Defence department told Gulf News a small fire erupted in the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) room belonging to a global channel in Dubai Media City.

Major Ali Hassan Al Mutawa, Director of Operations, Department at Dubai Civil Defence, said the fire took place around 3.05am yesterday.

The disruption also affected subscribers of OSN channels through local television service providers such as du. The network first issued an update on its Facebook page at 8.30am, alerting subscribers about "a massive power failure".
