We help you quit smoking

Gulf News begins a campaign to make you healthier. Readers who wish to quit smoking but cannot stop on their own are offered a chance to rid themselves of this addiction.

Smoking is as addictive as heroin and other opiates and requires will power and help from family and friends. This campaign is in partnership with DM [Dr Moopen's] Healthcare to mark World No Smoking Day.

Tobacco use is the second leading cause of death globally, after hypertension. This year more than 5 million will die from a tobacco-related heart attack, stroke or lung ailment. The good news is that this epidemic is preventable. You are in charge of your health!

DM Healthcare will spearhead a counselling and screening process of those who come forward to take part in the quit smoking campaign initiated by Gulf News starting May 31, 2011.

It will select 10 eligible candidates in the campaign which is expected to run for a year.

Gulf News readers will need to be:

In the age group of 18-50 years.

Should be a UAE resident with at least one year of residence visa.

The nomination should be backed by two witnesses, who will vouch for the candidate's pledge to quit smoking. (The witnesses will be suitably rewarded for their meticulous monitoring efforts)

The screening panel will include doctors with speciality in:

CardiologyPulmonologyGastroenterologyPsychologyPsychiatryGynaecology (targeted at women smokers)General Physician (for oncological reviews)

The selected 10 candidates will be screened and monitored on a regular basis for the tenure of the campaign.

The endeavour is to complete the screening process of selecting the 10 candidates by end of June.
