Man jailed 2 years for escaping from police detention

Dubai: A man was jailed for two years for destroying a steel-netted door on the rooftop of Al Muraqabat Police Station and escaping from detention.

The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the 29-year-old Iraqi man, J.Q., for two years because he broke away from the detention centre where he was being detained.

“The accused will have to pay Dh2000 [the cost of the repairs of the steel-netted door] to Dubai Police. He will be deported following the completion of his punishment,” said the presiding judge in courtroom four on Sunday.

In February, the Court of First Instance sentenced in absentia J.Q. and his 46-year-old Iranian accomplice, E.A., to three years in jail.

J.Q. contested against the judgment in absentia and was handed two years in jail during yesterday’s retrial.

Prosecutors charged the defendants of damaging the steel-netted door, climbing down a makeshift rope from the roof of the police station and absconding. They were charged with breaking out of the station and wrecking police property.

The two defendants pleaded not guilty.

According to the charge sheet, E.A. and J.Q. were detained at Al Muraqabat Police Station over theft cases. One of the men broke his bed and used a piece of iron to damage a door to the rooftop to escape. They tied a number of bed sheets together as a makeshift rope and climbed down from the rooftop to the backyard. Then they jumped over the wall and ran away.

A policeman said E.A, J.Q. and two others escaped.

Police detained E.A. and J.Q., who were caught hiding in a deserted villa in Al Hamriya.

Maid jailed for sex, child with man she says was husband

DUBAI // A Filipina maid was sentenced this morning to one year in prison for having sex with a man she said was her husband.

"He was not able to come to Dubai to bring the marriage contract," NR, 25, said in the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours while holding her 2-month-old boy.

Her compatriot JA, whom she said was her husband, was sentenced to one year in prison in absentia as he had left the country soon after NR got pregnant.

She testified they got married in the Philippines on June 10, 2007, three days before she moved to Dubai for work. She said she had gotten an offer in Dubai that she had been waiting for and couldn't turn it down.

NR worked for her Emirati sponsor for two years, then fled to live with her husband, who also had come to Dubai seeking work.

"He came on a visit visa and resided in Satwa," she said.

On July 27 of this year, NR gave birth and was arrested. She said the staff at Al Baraha Hospital did not ask her for any official documents proving she was married.

"We didnt know we would need marriage documents to prove our relation," she said in records.

NR is charged with having sex outside the wedlock, getting pregnant from an illicit relationship, absconding from her sponsor and overstaying her visa.

She denied the first two charges, saying her marriage certificate was in the Philippines. She did not provide the court a copy.

JA left the county 10 days before she gave birth because his visa was expiring, she said.

NR will be deported after her sentence.

Trial for jailed activist postponed

ABU DHABI // The first day of trial for AA, an Emirati activist arrested in April on charges involving criticising the Government, was postponed as prosecutors were granted a one-week delay.

It was the second time prosecutors received such an extension.

AA was due to appear in the State Security Court yesterday, but prosecutors asked to extend his stay in prison for at least a month for further questioning. The judge said he would give them one week.

AA was one of five activists arrested last April on charges of committing crimes of instigation, breaking laws and perpetrating acts that pose threats to state security, undermining the public order, opposing the government system, and insulting the President, the Vice President and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

The other detained activists are NB, HA, AK and FA.

If prosecutors do not conclude their interrogation within a week, they will have to apply for another extension.

The next hearing was set for Tuesday.
