Dubai: The Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) has approved a draft to set up a defence board to protect Arab journalists, as proposed by the UAE Journalists' Association.
Mohammad Yousuf, chairman of the association, made the statement as he chaired the association's general assembly meeting held at Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai recently.
The defence board will be headquartered in the UAE, Yousuf said.
"The board will protect Arab journalists involved in cases related to their job, and will sue whoever affronts, obstructs or attacks any Arab journalist wherever he is," Yousuf explained.
The board's logo and website have already been designed and will be shortly launched to allow Arab journalists to network and communicate with each other.
He added that a voluntary team of journalists and lawyers from the board will take legal action and work on protecting their rights in such cases, while a sub-defence board will be set up in every Arab country.
"Work is under way to host a meeting of the Arab Group of Journalists with the Federations of Journalists in Latin America and Africa.
Budget talk
"As many as 140 heads of journalists' bodies and federations in these countries will attend the meeting to be held under the supervision of the Arab Federation and the International Federation of Journalists," Yousuf said.
The meeting reviewed the decisions in Morocco last week. It also discussed the association's estimated budget for 2011 which is proposed by the board of directors, as well as its past activities and future programmes.
Regarding Emiratisation in the media field, Yousuf said the National Media Council decided to take over the project from the Journalists Association, although a budget of Dh1 million was allocated for this project by the association last year.
