Salesman convicted over bribe offer to Dubai policeman

Dubai A Singaporean salesman faces a three-month jail term after a court convicted him of offering a bribe of Dh575 to a policeman and urging him not to book his car, which was wanted by the Dubai Courts Department.

The Dubai Court of First Instance incriminated the 50-year-old salesman, S.B., of bribing a policeman.

Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout, who pronounced Monday's judgment, said the accused will be deported after serving his imprisonment. The judgment is subject to appeal within 15 days.

"I am not guilty. I asked the claimant to release me, but I did not offer him [any money] or speak about a bribe," argued S.B. when he defended himself in court.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors accused S.B. of offering a bribe to a policeman near the Ports Police Station in Al Hamriya.

The suspect was wanted for absconding and staying illegally in the country.

His lawyer, Ahmad Al Amiri, said in court: "The accusation is baseless. The incident happened when the policeman stopped my client because his car was wanted for unpaid traffic violations. S.B. was in a rush and asked the policeman to release him and showed [his] willingness to pay his fines. When the policeman asked him ‘How much will you pay', S.B. said he would pay his pending fines. The policeman took my client to the police station for questioning. For the second time, the policeman asked him how much he would pay… S.B. took out all the money that was in his pocket and gave it to the policeman. S.B. wanted to pay his fines, but the policeman fabricated the bribery allegations."
