Mohammad reaffirms Japan ties

Tokyo: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sunday stressed the importance of improving bilateral trade with Japan, the world's third biggest economy.

He said the UAE economy is doing well and has overcome the global financial crisis.

Japan is one of the UAE's biggest trading partners. The UAE, the Arab world's second biggest economy, is one of Japan's biggest sources of hydrocarbons, while Japan is one of the largest suppliers of electronics, automobiles and technologies that power the UAE economy.

Shaikh Mohammed is on a tour of Japan where he is holding meetings with senior officials exploring ways to improve bilateral economic relations.

He stressed the keenness of the UAE's leadership, government and people to develop and maintain these relations for the benefit of both nations.

Experiencing culture

Shaikh Mohammad toured a number of tourist and commercial destinations on the second day of his visit and acquainted himself with the Japanese way of life, folklore, culture and cuisine.

Shaikh Mohammad expressed his admiration for Japanese culture and heritage, which he said reflects the civility of the country's people, who were able to overcome many challenges and achieve prosperity, industrial development and higher technology due to their determination to reach international standards in all fields.

Shaikh Mohammad also met with various Japanese officials and businessmen, and they discussed the friendly bilateral relations between both countries and peoples.

In an interview with a leading Japanese television channel, Shaikh Mohammad said that the UAE economy is doing well and has overcome the repercussions of the global recession. He said the noticeable growth achieved in the national economy during 2010 and this year point to the UAE's recovery. Shaikh Mohammad attributed this growth to the wise and careful policies adopted by the UAE in addressing the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

He also discussed the historic economic, trade and cultural relations shared between the UAE and Japan, which are based on mutual benefit for both nations' peoples, as well as mutual respect.

He praised the Japanese economy and the steady growth and progress it has achieved in various sectors, especially in its boom in advanced industries, and financial and technological advancements which have raised Japan's prosperity to some of the highest levels in the world

Appreciating capabilities

He pointed out in this context the Japanese economy's capability to be globally competitive, and said that because of the creativity and innovation of its people, Japan was able to prove its strength and presence in the global economy in every field.

Shaikh Mohammad said that the UAE welcomes Japanese businessmen and companies, and several are operating in the UAE in various economic, financial and technological sectors. He said these companies and businessmen enjoy the trust and support of the relevant bodies in the UAE, and contribute positively to enhancing the strategic partnership between Japan and the UAE.

The UAE is host to a large Japanese expatriate community, too, he added.
