Etisalat warns people against mobile phone scam

Abu Dhabi: Etisalat has issued SMS warnings to its customers against a scam.

Victims received calls from individuals — posing as an etisalat employee — who informed them that they had won a large amount of money.

Victims shared a part of the serial number on their SIM card with the caller, believing that they could use the amount won to purchase prepaid phone cards worth Dh1,500.

An official from etisalat told Gulf News that all SIM cards have the same first eight numbers (89971122), so knowing these numbers is not an indication that the caller is an etisalat employee.

He also confirmed that when etisalat wants to inform someone of a win, he or she will be required to go physically to an etisalat office to claim the prize.
