Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police arrested a gang that took advantage of promotional offers and mobile telephone services to scam mobile service providers.
Five Arabs in 45 days were able to have 200 prepaid GSM cards issued under fake names.
Brigadier General Hamad Al Hammadi, Director of Criminal Investigation estimated the total amount of fraud at Dh 00,000. He confirmed that the arrested suspects were all residency law violators. They set up an operation to perform high quality forgery of trading licenses, passports, residency permits and stamps.
A complicity between the gang and some shops was also proven as they were performing scam on phone credit balance transfer in addition to selling 30 mobile phones on promotion.
SH. M. 24-year old, M. Y, 24 year- old, N.D 26 year old and two young females N.B 27- year and H.H. were arrested following a tip off that the police received according to Col Dr. Rashid Bu Rasheed, head of the Organized Crime Investigation in Criminal Investigation Department.
Bu Rasheed pointed out that scam victims this time were not limited to individuals but companies as well.
An official from Etisalat told Gulf News that this type of scam is not new. All Etisalat Sim cards have the same serial number and the same applies to Du Sim cards. Both companies warned people from such scams. When Etisalat wants to inform someone of winning he or she will be required to actually physically go to Etisalat office.
