Abu Dhabi: Car pooling, shuttle buses for employees and flexible working hours are among policies planned to reduce congestion and make Abu Dhabi one of the best cities with world-class infrastructure and transportation systems, it was announced on Sunday.
The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi is developing a Transportation Mobility Management Strategy, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, to reduce congestion on roads, and thus improve mobility across the emirate, according to a statement released by the DoT.
The main objective of the strategy is to improve the way of travel, making Abu Dhabi an attractive, efficient and healthier place for the public. As part of the strategy, it will seek inputs from key stakeholders and work with local organisations and businesses to develop transport mobility management plans.
The strategy seeks to increase choice of transportation modes and implement sustainable travel options. It uses a mix of policies, education, information and infrastructure to address Abu Dhabi's travel needs in a way that reduces the number of cars on the roads at any given point of time, thus reducing congestion.
Specific initiatives in this strategy could include alternatives to single-occupancy car travel, introduction of flexible working hours, shuttle buses for employees or video-conferencing facilities.
The Transportation Mobility Management Strategy is a significant building block in helping Abu Dhabi fulfil its growth potential. It offers organisations and businesses the unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in having their own mobility management plan developed and executed."
As Abu Dhabi continues to grow, congestion is bound to increase, which affects almost everyone in Abu Dhabi; individuals as well as establishments. In view of this, DoT is developing strategies and policies for transport management to make Abu Dhabi one of the best cities with world-class infrastructure and transportation systems.
The DoT is developing an overarching transport strategy for Abu Dhabi. It will also produce individual mobility management plans for a number of selected organisations. The DoT will work with these organisations to test the approach and identify how best to implement them in other establishments.
