Abu Dhabi: The churches in the capital are conducting special prayers as part of three special occasions — Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter on Sunday.
Most of the churches were receiving more worshippers when the special prayers began last Sunday.
Maundy Thursday commemorates the last supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. Jesus' resurrection is celebrated on Easter Sunday.
The Christian expatriates in the UAE are not only committed to their religious duties but grateful and loyal to this country which gives them freedom and support, a visiting Indian Bishop told Gulf News Wednesday.
"I noticed that expatriates here are dedicatedly doing fasting and charity which are the two wings of the prayers," Bishop Zachariah Mar Theophilos, Metropolitan of Malabar Diocese in Kerala, said.
He is in the capital to lead prayers at St George Orthodox Cathedral.
The worshippers have been observing a 50-day long fast but many of the expatriate bachelors are unable to do so without the support of a family, said Sibi Kadavil, a media person in the capital.
"So most of us [he being a bachelor] at least observe the last one week fasting," he added.
