Abu Dhabi: A total of 58 human trafficking cases were registered last year, a top official said.
Dr. Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, said this at a press conference on Sunday.
The annual report, "Combating Human Trafficking in the UAE - 2010-2011", highlights the country's stand on the crime, efforts to counter it, progress made, obstacles encountered, and plans for the future.
According to the report, 58 human trafficking cases were registered last year, as opposed to 43 cases in 2010.
Dr Gargash said among these cases, 28 were in Dubai, 13 in Sharjah and seven in Abu Dhabi, noting that there were 152 victims, while suspects involved in these cases numbered 169.
Dr Gargash attributed the increase in the number of crimes applied to Federal Law No 51 of 2006 to the compliance of law enforcement bodies, the effectiveness of measures taken to combat the crimes and the increasing awareness about the danger of human trafficking crimes and the need to disclose them.
The report highlighted achievements in the field of combating human trafficking, including the opening of two shelters for victims in Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah and setting up a hotline to assure the people, especially those who come as visitors to the country.
"The UAE shoulders its responsibilities to become a model in the region and an active member of the international community, and hence it will continue to take a lead on this issue in the region and internationally," Dr Gargash said.
He added that the UAE's effective anti-human trafficking programme makes it gain international respect. Dr Gargash referred to the quartet plan of the committee which is represented in developing and updating legislation and laws as well as enforcement of deterrent measures and protecting human trafficking victims.
