Abu Dhabi : International auditing body PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) will monitor the well-being of workers on Saadiyat island.
The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) Tuesday announced that it has appointed the independent auditor to monitor the performance of its contractors and subcontractors with regard to worker benefits and services.
Workers on the island are employed via third party companies, who are obliged to adhere to UAE Labour Law, and also required to comply with TDIC's Employment Practice Policy (EPP), a document that sets out strict policies to safeguard workers' welfare based on international best practice.
In stringently monitoring contractors' compliance with welfare rules, PwC will report to TDIC on key aspects of worker welfare, including withholding of personal documents, illegal recruitment fees, payment of wages, health and safety, and working and living conditions.
Report to be made public
The results of the audit reports will be released in a comprehensive report to the public on an annual basis. During the reporting cycles, PwC will conduct formal and informal interviews with construction workers in their own language, as well as with the contractors and subcontractors.
Surprise visits
PwC will conduct scheduled and surprise site visits to check contractors' compliance.
Sultan Mohammad Al Mahmoud, executive director of Strategic Performance and chairman of the EPP steering committee at TDIC said: "TDIC is deeply committed to safeguarding the rights of workers on its projects. We are happy with the results we have achieved to date through our EPP, and the appointment of PwC will help us to confirm that all our contractors and subcontractors are adhering to all their contractual obligations in relation to workers' rights, and that they have the right support to help them meet these regulations."
