LONDON // Britain has demanded a full investigation into the death of a convicted drugs smuggler in a Dubai prison last week.

A foreign office spokesman in London said yesterday police in the UAE had assured the UK embassy such an investigation was taking place after the Briton Peter Kane, 40, was found dead in his cell in the drugs wing of Dubai Central Jail on Friday evening.

Kane was sentenced to 10 years in prison last year after being arrested at Dubai International Airport in February while in transit from Sao Paulo to London.

He had 810 grams of cocaine in his underwear and had swallowed more than a kilogram of capsules containing the drug.

Prison officials said on Tuesday that Kane was a diabetic needing regular treatment and there was no "criminal suspicion" surrounding the death.

The government spokesman in London said: "Embassy officials have spoken directly to the Dubai Police and have stressed the importance of a full investigation.

"The embassy has been assured this is taking place and is working closely with the Dubai authorities. A post-mortem is due to be carried out within days."

He added Kane's next of kin had been informed and were being offered consular assistance.
