Police arrest 220 labourers with fake documents

Abu Dhabi: A police raid on a workers' accommodation site in the Musaffah Industrial Area netted 220 Bangladeshi labourers who had fake papers.

The police said they had a tip-off about the workers living in unhygienic conditions.

Major General Nasser Bin Al Awadi Al Menhali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, said police also caught the ringleader, "X. G. M", 29 years old, from Bangladesh.

"The workers tried to flee but they were apprehended," he said. "Our teams were successful in apprehending those who violated the UAE laws by working without valid identification. Out of the 300 labourers we inspected at the camp, 220 were found to have false documents," he said.

Health and safety

Al Menhali also noted that inspectors found the accommodations did not follow the health and safety requirements.

"It was overcrowded, there were many cockroaches. It was dirty and there was a high risk of transmission of various diseases," he said.

Al Menhali urged people to keep an eye out for those suspected to have entered the country illegally and to call the government helpline 800 8080 to report any offences they have observed.

He said entry and residence violators face a two month imprisonment and a Dh100,000 fine. Company owners who violate UAE labour law will be fined Dh50,000 each.
