Sharjah Used Book Fair raises Dh500,000 for charity

Sharjah: The fourth edition of the Used Book Fair organised by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services raised Dh500,000 for charity, officials announced on Wednesday.

The Minister of Education, Humaid Mohammad Al Qutami, on Wednesday honoured 161 participants - including volunteers and sponsors - who made the event, which happened in March, successful.

The minister lauded the role of the Used Book Fair, in promoting reading habits among youngsters. "The values and ideals embodied in the book fair are praiseworthy. It not only supports dissemination of knowledge and the love for books but also promotes the values of volunteerism and humanitarian services," he said.

While the event supports development of the entire community, students benefit the most, he added.

The honouring ceremony was held at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This year's Used Book Fair was held under the theme ‘The Treasure of Knowledge'. The used books were sold at between Dh1 and Dh20, and all the books are provided by school students.

The money raised in the fair will be used to fund the various departments that operate under the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS).

The money will be used to buy wheelchairs and equipment for children with special needs, pay tuition fees for needy children studying at schools that operate under SCHS, and so on.

Over 500 volunteers helped put up the fair, which saw the participation of 120 orgnisations including public and private schools and universities.

Mona Abdel Karim, schools coordinator at SCHS, said that the event helped generate funds for SCHS while promoting reading habit among community members and encouraging them to sign up as volunteers for a humanitarian cause.

She said that the event has moved further ahead of its success last year, when Dh 200,000 was raised.

Since the launch of the event four years ago, the number of books we were able to collect from students have also increased manifold, she added.
