Students get a taste of space

Dubai: Encouraging students to pursue careers in science starts early these days, especially since there is a dearth of these graduates in the workforce.

Since October last year high schools in the country started sending teenagers between 12 and 18 years old to participate in the US Space and Rocket Centre's Interactive Astronaut space camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

More than 200 students have completed the week-long camp to date.

Recently students from Cambridge International High School and Al Salam school visited the centre where they participated in simulated shuttle missions, trained like astronauts and slept in quarters designed like those of the International Space Station.

The idea behind the programme is to promote and stimulate students' interest in science, technology and mathematics (Stem), said Lissy Donald, from Compass International Tours, who organises the tours.

Twelve-year-old Amona Donald at Cambridge International High School said building model rockets, taking astronaut roles and completing team challenges with students from other countries was "challenging and exciting".
