UAE pledges US$ 7,194,000 for UN development programmes and funds during 2012

WAM New York, Nov 9th, 2011 (WAM) -- The United Arab Emirates has pledged US$ 7,194,000 for a number of UN development programmes and funds during the year 2012.

Ambassador Ahmed Al-Jarman, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations announced this before the United Nations Pledging Conference for Development Activities 2011.

Following is the full speech of Al-Jarman: Mr. President, I am pleased on behalf of the delegation of the United Arab Emirates to thank the President of the United Nations Pledging Conference for Development Activities, and wish to seize this opportunity to express our appreciation for the efforts made by the United Nations agencies, programmes and funds to mobilize development and relief assistance to affected peoples, particularly in the developing countries, whose crises have been exacerbated due to armed conflicts or natural disasters.

Mr. President, The United Arab Emirates, which has keen interest in strengthening the work of these international agencies, funds and programs as part of its foreign policy strategy towards helping the governments of developing countries to improve their economic and social and development conditions, hopes that all states and international donors increase their contributions to these important funds and programs in order to enable their governing bodies to meet the growing challenges resulting from the critical economic and financial crises facing our world.

On this occasion, I am pleased to announce the following from the Government of the United Arab Emirates for the 2012 budget of the following UN development programmes and funds: - US 324,000 (Three hundred twenty four thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

- US 200,000.00 (Two hundred thousand US dollars) for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

- US 100,000.00 (One hundred thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Children's Fund "UNICEF".

- US 100,000.00 (One hundred thousand US dollars) for the Fund to Support Marine Navigation in the Straits of Malacca.

- US 100,000.00 (One hundred thousand US dollars) for the International Committee of the International Red Cross.

- US 50,000.00 (Fifty thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Development Fund for Women.

- US 50,000.00 (Fifty thousand US dollars) for the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

- US 50,000.00 (Fifty thousand US dollars) for the Trust Fund to Support the Activities of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

- US 40,000.00 (Forty thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

- US 40,000.00 (Forty thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Trust Fund for the Promotion of South-South Cooperation.

- US 30,000.00 (Thirty thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Fund.

- US 30,000.00 (Thirty thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of slavery.

- US 20,000.00 (Twenty thousand US dollars) for the Trust Fund of the Coordination Office of Emergency Relief Operations.

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations International Drug Control Program Fund.

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability.

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.

- US 10,000.00 (Ten thousand US dollars) for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Trust Fund.

I am further pleased to announce the following contributions from the United Arab Emirates: - US $ 1,000,000 (One Million US Dollars) for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) - budget 2012.

- US $ 5,000,000 (Five Million US Dollars) for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

With the above contributions, the total contributions pledged by the UAE Government to UN funds and programs for the year 2012 are US$ 7,194,000 (Seven million one hundred ninety four thousand US dollars).
