DUBAI: Road works are giving prestigious New Dubai a bad reputation, said residents, complaining that they are never-ending.
Progress with road works is obvious in and around The Springs and Meadows, but there seems to be no end to construction works on roads and roundabouts around The Lakes, Meadows, Al Barsha and Tecom.
Irish expatriate Jennifer Hofman has a healthy way of avoiding the mess and getting around with her children - biking or walking.
Hofman moved to The Springs around four years ago and quickly decided to stay off the roads for safety reasons and ease. "It's easier to be on a bike than being stuck sitting in a car."
A comment from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) was not available and Emaar Properties also had no information, saying road works were the RTA's responsibility.
British expat Jessica Stokes, a teacher at The Lakes Garden Nursery, waits up to 30 minutes in her car to reach her workplace because of the road works blocking access. "It's not even peak traffic time. After I arrive in the area, it can take me 30 minutes to drive to the play centre."
The problem seems to be the workers who often block part of the road with work trucks, she said.
Long-time Meadows resident Melanie Sabunchi said she has given up hoping the work will ever get finished. "Every year I go away in summer and look forward to coming back and seeing the progress, but it's just never ending. I've been here almost eight years and road works are part of life here." The area used to look beautiful, she said, describing The Lakes entrance with pelicans and greenery. After a few years, they ripped it all apart and started the road works, Sabunchi added.
Tecom resident Stuart Bingham said the area's road network is forever changing. "The route you take is always different because of the road works. Just wait, next week there'll be another change," he said.
