Student orchestra demonstrates what harmony can achieve

Abu Dhabi: The ‘ADEC Student Orchestra' comprising 240 Cycle 1 school pupils from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region yesterday gave a brilliant debut performance to underline the uniqueness of the first-of-its-kind initiative in the Gulf region.

The inaugural concert was held at Al Mustaqbal Model School auditorium yesterday with the young performers playing symphonies composed by well-known musicians such as Greek composer Vangelis and Egyptian composer Yasser Abdul Rahman besides a composition dedicated to President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The audience was visibly impressed by the talent on display. Mohammad Adel Al Marikhi, a student at Al Soqour Model School, presented a solo performance on the Marimba, while Hameed Al Mansouri, a student of Al Silaa School, played the Oud.

Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, director-general of Abu Dhabi Education Council, stressed that ADEC is keen to support talented students in their artistic pursuits. "Both quality education and useful sport and artistic activities are necessary for enhancing students' creativity and innovation. We need Emirati students who have different artistic skills such as painting, sculpture, music and others," he said thanking music tutors in the three regional offices for sponsoring and training the students.

The 240 talented students were selected through teacher-based taskforces under the guidance of the regional offices' music education supervisors.
