DUBAI: More than 1,700 delegates from different parts of the world descended upon Dubai this week to attend the five-day International Association of Public Transport (UITP) congress and exhibition, which closes on Thursday. Here are some highlights from the event:
More Pink taxis
Dubai plans to double its female-driven pink taxi fleet from the current 26 to about 50 units by the end of the year.
Solar bus
Revealed at the event was a solar-powered bus, which can go up to 40km/h. The 14-seater model of the Chinese-made Kudo bus, priced at $30,000 (Dh110,100), covers 100km on a single charge.
Alcolock
Canadian company ACS has launched an "alcohol lock" that measures the breath alcohol concentration of a driver and prevents the vehicle from starting if the level is over a pre-set limit.
