Dubai: For over 25 years, Ronald Almeida has been driving by the book. He abided by speed limits, fastened his seat belt, indicated before changing lanes and would not be caught dead talking on his mobile phone while driving.
Almeida was, therefore, shocked to be pulled over by a police patrol in Deira on Wednesday, and was eagerly waiting to find out what he had done wrong, only to be told that he had done something right.
Thanks to his careful driving, Almeida, a Dubai resident of 34 years, was selected as a RoadStar in the 25th Caltex RoadStar Contest that aims to honour exemplary drivers in the UAE.
"I am surprised and I still don't know what I'll do with the money, but I'll probably buy my wife a gift," he said, after receiving a certificate and the prize of Dh1,000.
Another winner, Ali Al Rahbi from Ras Al Khaimah, has good reason to drive carefully. Two years ago Al Rahbi lost his 17-year-old son in an accident caused by a reckless driver.
"I am visiting Dubai with my wife to do some shopping, and it is a pleasant surprise to win Dh1,000 which we will spend at the mall," Al Rahbi said.
Abdullah Sabbagh, an engineer, was shopping before returning to Syria.
To find out he was a Caltex RoadStar was an added advantage, because he had extra money to spend or take back home.
