Suspended term for policeman in Dubai theft case

Dubai: A policeman got a suspended imprisonment after a court convicted him of abusing his job and taking a bluetooth device from a Duty Free shop at Dubai International Airport.

The Dubai Court of First Instance awarded the 21-year-old Emirati policeman a six-month suspended imprisonment after he pleaded for leniency and returned the device.

Prosecutors had charged A.K. with abusing his public service and taking the device which belonged to a government department [Dubai Civil Aviation].

Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout said the imprisonment will be suspended for a period of three years, during which the crime should not be repeated. According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said that A.K. abused his duty by taking the device in an unlawful manner.

He walked to the Duty Free section and opened the box, before taking the device worth Dh500. The court also fined A.K. Dh500.

As per duty

An Emirati corporal testified that A.K. worked under his supervision, adding that his role was to bring back to the police desk any belongings which are left behind.

"The management informed us that a bluetooth earphone was stolen. The surveillance cameras exposed A.K. taking the earphone. At first he denied and upon confronting him with the footage, he denied again. He claimed that he would bring back the earphone or pay for its price and asked us to help him not to be implicated," the corporal said.

The primary judgment remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
